Jingle All The Way Ornament with Sandy McTier

Jingle Bells! Jingle Bells! Jingle all the Way! That is one of my favourite Christmas tunes, and the entire time I was painting this ornament – I was singing it – loudly!

Prep: I painted the chipboard with an even coat of Gesso using a large oval foam brush. This allowed me to either brush it on or tap it on for added texture, as desired. For this piece, I brushed on a smooth coat of Gesso. Once one side dried, I repeated the process on the other side. I think this gives the chipboard a bit more stability.

Next, I painted an even coat of DecoArt Multi-Surface Sealer on the ornament and let it dry. Once completely dry, I gave it a light sanding. Then I base coated the ornament with DecoArt Antique White using a Dynasty Black Gold 3/4" Flat Wash brush.

I wanted a border around the edge and found the easiest way to create it was by sketching the same shape of the edge in just a bit with a pencil.

I stamped the background with a beautiful Stampendous Holiday Stamp using some StazOn Ink. Since I had to stamp it a few times to cover the ornament, I moved the stamp around in order to avoid an obvious pattern.

I painted the border with DecoArt Media Pyrrole Red using a Dynasty Black Gold 3/8” Angle brush. Once dry, I floated some Raw Umber around the inside edge of the red border to give the border a little dimension.

I painted the ribbon with Pyrrole Red and the bells with Metallic Gold. Using the 3/8” Angle, I painted the folds on the ribbon and where it meets the bells. Using a liner brush, I painted on some thin lines of Titanium White.

I added some more white lines to give the ribbon a plaid appearance and then dry brushed some white highlights on the loops, bow center and on the bells.
Tip: When I dry brush, I like using the Dynasty Mezzaluna brushes. I load the brush with paint and then wipe almost all of the paint off. Then I dry brush in the desired area. It’s easier to build up the layers to the desired look.

Next, I placed the bells on the ornament and lightly drew around the shape so that I could add some shadows with Paynes Gray. I added the words and then painted them in with a Dynasty Black Gold #2 Round brush loaded with Carbon Black. Once dry, I added a shadow with Titanium White. Load a very wet 3/8” Angle with Titanium White and tap the middle of the handle onto the middle of another brush to splatter some white here and there. Quickly wipe it off where you don’t want it.
Words TIP: Print off a word(s) from your computer and then, using transfer paper and a pen, transfer the words onto your piece. Paint with a liner brush or small round brush using a colour of your choice!

Once everything is dry, varnish with DecoArt Soft-Touch Varnish.
To finish, glue the chipboard on the ornament using E6000.
Add a ribbon and hang!

I hope this inspires you to create some ornaments today!!

  1. Sandy a wonderful blog Love the design and your work it is awesome. Thank you for letting me know about your blog. I haven't ventured into multi media where stamps and paper are involved but would love to try a few as soon as our lives slow down a bit. Again love the Christmas bells.
